15-5 PH Stainless Steel Investment Castings
15-5 PH is a precipitating hardness stainless steel with high strength, hardness, and corrosion resistance. It’s commonly hardened after casting through heat treatment to increase its strength.
Milwaukee Precision Casting, Inc. can cast 15-5 PH stainless steel with our investment casting process, also known as lost wax casting, for components with precise tolerance requirements and complex geometry.
Chemical Composition of 15-5 PH Stainless Steel:
- Carbon (C): ≤0.07%
- Chromium (Cr): 14.0-15.50%
- Copper (Cu): 2.5-4.50%
- Iron (Fe): Bal.
- Sulfur (S): ≤0.03%
- Nickel (Ni): 3.5-5.5%
- Manganese (Mn): ≤1.0%
- Silicon (Si): ≤1.0%
- Phosphorus (P): ≤0.04%
- Niobium (Nb) + Tantalum (Ta): 0.15-0.45%
Industries & Applications of 15-5 Investment Castings:
15-5 PH stainless steel is commonly used in industries & applications that require high strength and high corrosion resistance, including:
- Food processing equipment
- Pumps & Valves
- Gears & shafts
- Fasteners
- Oil & gas components
What’s the Difference Between 17-4 and 15-5 PH Stainless Steel?
17-4 PH and 15-5 PH are both martensitic, precipitating hardness stainless steels; however, they display key differences in their properties. 17-4 contains approximately 17% chromium and 4% nickel, while 15-5 contains approximately 15% chromium and 5% nickel.
Compared to 17-4, 15-5 is a newer variant with increased toughness due to higher nickel content. This gives it improvements for components with high pressure or extreme temperature requirements. However, the higher levels of chromium in 17-4 may make for a better option in corrosive environments.
