420 Stainless Steel Investment Castings
Stainless steel alloy 420 is a martensitic alloy with high hardness compared to other stainless steel alloys. Its brittleness makes it commonly used for cutlery, machinery components such as bearings, gears and shafts, and valve components.
Chemical Composition of 420 Stainless Steel:
- Carbon (C): 0.15%
- Manganese (Mn): 1.00%
- Silicon (Si): 1.00%
- Chromium (Cr): 12.00-14.00%
- Phosphorus (P): 0.04%
- Sulfur (S): 0.03%
- Iron (Fe): Balance
Is SS 420 Corrosion Resistant?
420 stainless steel has a moderate level of corrosion resistance. However, it is lower than other stainless steels such as ss 316, which contains 3% molybdenum, and ss 304, which contains up to 21% chromium.
Stainless steel 420 has up to 14% chromium, still giving it decent corrosion resistance. However, it’s at the lower end of the sprectrum. Alloy 420 works best if you are looking for a stainless steel alloy with high hardness.
Industries & Applications of 420 Investment Castings:
420 stainless steel is used in a wide range of industries and functions, including but not limited to:
- Petrochemical equipment ·
- Pump & valve components
- Transportation components
- Machine components
- Spindles
- Pipe fittings
